James Joseph Smith

James Joseph (Joe) Smith, 70 of Dugger, IN passed away Friday, August 23, 2019 at his residence.

            Joe was born in Sullivan Co August 23, 1949 the son of James Albert Smith and Ruth Beatrice (Hubble) Smith Ashcraft.   He was a retired coal miner after 42 years and a member of the United Mine Workers Local #1410.   

            He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William (Bill) Smith and Monie M. Smith, one sister, Judy Dale Smith Gennicks.

            Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Linda Smith, three daughters, Tracy Jo Reagan of TN, Emily JoBeth Jewell (Todd) of Pleasantville, IN, and Angela Jobe (Chriss) of Dugger, IN one son, Stephen King of Dugger, IN, nine grandchildren, Shelby Reagan, Addison Jewell, Seth Jewell, Kade King, Korissa Jobe, Kaleb King, Isaac Jobe, Lauren Jobe, and Ellie Jobe, one great grandchild, David King, two special nephews, Jeff Smith (Timi) of Dugger, IN and Terry Smith (Mindy) of Dugger, IN, several nieces and nephews.

            Funeral services will be held at Newkirk’s Funeral Home in Dugger, IN on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 27, 2019 3:00 P.M. to the time of the service. Joe along with his wife Linda have voluntarily taken care of the school grounds by mowing and doing landscaping ever since the school reopened in August, 2014. Joe attended all of our public-school  board meetings and was an active participant. He was always looking for ways to improve our school. In lieu of flowers the family wish for donations to be made to the Dugger Union Community School
